CANE FURNITURE PRODUCTION LINE

CANE FURNITURE - STORAGE ROOM

Collecting the type and sizes of cane for the furniture piece to be made.

CANE FURNITURE - STEAMING CHAMBER

Steam the pole cane for 10/15 minutes depending upon the diameter of the cane and the curve required.

CANE FURNITURE - CUTTING

Cutting the cane to the marked measurements

CANE FURNITURE - BENDING

Cane is bent manually in fabricated jigs and moulds. To achieve the bend, heating of the pole is an absolute necessity. We use the Steam method, as it is suited to cane with a diameter of more than 30mm. It is important to determine the bending tolerance for the cane species and size.

CANE FURNITURE - ASSEMBLY

There are a wide variety of jointing techniques for cane. In most cases, screws and nails will be used with glue to strengthen the joint. Screws are used for fixing the load bearing and support joints, while nails are usually used for non-load bearing joints and decorative attachments. The parts are then partly assembled. Further bending may be required to acquire its final form before final assembly.

CANE FURNITURE - WRAPPING

Where the visible joints have been built, it is advisable to bind them with rattan peel. Wrapping is used extensively as strengthening and as decorative features. The most common types of binding are the wrap around and mat weave. Wrap around binding is usually used on butt joints while the mat weave is used for covering the exposed ends of cane, for example, on the arm rest.

CANE FURNITURE - FILLING

The item is then sent for Filling where supports are inserted for further strengthening.

CANE FURNITURE - STOPPING

Screws and nails that are exposed are concealed with stopping.

CANE FURNITURE - WEAVING

The furniture piece is sent to the Weaving Department where precise holes are drilled where the uprights are inserted and master craftsmen now apply their creative weaving skills.

CANE FURNITURE - FINISHING

The most time consuming part is sanding with the grain of the cane to achieve an all over smooth finish and to bring out the beauty of cane. The choice of stain is selected and applied. The item is sanded again before its final coating.

CANE FURNITURE - WEBBING

The Webbing is cut to the size required and placed in water. A groove is cut into the Cane frame where the webbing is placed. A wood tool is used to hammer the webbing into the grove. A strip of 4mm cane is hammered on top to secure the webbing in the groove.
